Judges' Training?

Who would have thought... judges need training!!! In all my years as a Toastie, the subject of judges and their 'qualifications' (or lack thereof) has been a hotly-debated topic.

Some have been VERY vocal about it. After all, it is the LOSERS who become the judges! If I lose my club contest, I will very likely be invited to judge at the area contest.

A judge needs NO qualifications. A brand new member:
  • who has not delivered Project 1
  • who is terrified of standing up to speak in front of a group
  • who is a member of a Putonghua club
  • who speaks minimal English...
can judge! OK, so this is a slight exaggeration, but it makes my point.

So, last Saturday Talis Wong & Michael Wee - both DTMs - conducted a training workshop. I couldn't make it myself, but let's hope the attendees are better-equipped to assess the speeches of their counterparts at the upcoming contests.

Hi! If I remember correctly, must done project 6 for area contest and up. And it would be stupid for the chief but pick a judge that does not know English well...but it does happen.

I find last Saturday's Judge Training Workshop very rewarding. Never attended such kind of training before. I couldn't hide my joy to tell you that I won a golden little gift from Mr Wee that day.

Yes, I also attended the Judges' Training Workshop. Thanks for the preparation work of the Organizer. I think it is very fruitful to me.

Just wonder if you have encountered the following problem. If a judge can't hear some of the contest speeches properly due to various reasons, what can be done? It happened to me when I had problem to hear some of the International Speech Contest speeches picked by the Workshop Organizer on that day.

Being a judge you need to pay full attention during the contest, if one of the contestant speech is not hear fully than you have to give marks base on what you have heard. It is comment sometime we will miss out part of the speech, but the final decision is in your hand, therefore you need to be fair and mark the contestant base on what you heard.
